Velodrome, Kazanlak

Preliminary studies and concept design for an indoor sports hall within the outline of the existing velodrome in Kazanlak, commissioned by the municipality.

The hall is sunk three metres below the level of the lawn and keeps the outline of the open concrete track. The approach is from the south, under the banked curve of the track, which is rebuilt on a reinforced concrete colonnade. Athletes and spectators pass beneath it.

Function

The lower level holds the entrance and the public foyer, ticket desks, a cloakroom, a press conference room, a doctor's room, doping control, six changing rooms for 30 people each, a general fitness room, administration, workshops and stores.

The upper level holds the 24 by 45 m playing field for handball, volleyball, basketball, tennis, badminton, wrestling, martial arts and gymnastics. The banked curves have room for one more basketball court and one more volleyball court.

The stands seat 1250 spectators. For performances and assemblies a further 1250 seats are placed on the field, 2500 in all.

Parking

180 parking spaces in the converted existing car park, with the option of 180 more to the west and 40 to the east.
